For the non-Hindus, the Pancha Ganapati is a five-day festival in honor of Ganesha, the patron of the arts and sciences, the Lord of Beginnings and the Lord of Obstacles. He is revered (and worshipped) not only by Hindus, but also Buddhists, Jains, and other religions. It was created about twenty years ago by American Hindus and is celebrated from December 21st through December 25th — so it sort of borrows a Christian tradition of putting holidays on top of other holidays so that its followers don't feel left out. (Like Christmas and the pagan mid-winter feasts.)
Along those lines, Sita Sings the Blues is a terrific 2008 animated film by cartoonist Nina Paley. It is, as Jason describes, a slightly irreverent animated version of the Ramayana with 1920's jazz songs (all sung by Annette Hanshaw). It's also quite a lovely film, and since it's available for download for free (even in high definition), I urge you all to check it out.
Here's its trailer:
I was doing some Christmas shopping this week, trawling the ol’ mall, and discovered, in the charming little family-owned boutique known as Pottery Barn, a series of reproduction antique globes, carefully crafted with strange woods, metals and lines to give the impression of being “authentically old-timey” and thus interesting, but also brought fully and boringly up-to-date to reflect modern global political boundaries. These globes are now totally and utterly 100% accurate in every way.

oh wait
p.s. if you don’t get it

December 24th, 2009: It's true, Dinosaur Comics got personified last night and wished everyone an awesome new year. I do too! This is where I take my MINI CHRISTMAS VACATION: there'll be no new comic Christmas Day, and I'll be running Klassik Komicks until January 1st, 2010 (next Friday!) So it's really just four Klasik Komix. I keep spelling "Klassick Kowmics" differently each time because they're that classic! Have fun, everyone, and thank you for making 2009 one of my best years ever. It's still amazing that I get to do this comic instead of having a real job, and it's all thanks to you guys. – Ryan
Merry Christmas, if that's your thing. If not, happy, um, winter solstice?
Whatever your religion (or in my case upbringing, I suppose), hopefully you'll all get a nice hot meal, if nothing else.
And be nice to your local movie theater kids if you end up seeing a movie over the long weekend. Some of them aren't even getting holiday pay because their theater chain is run by capitalist swine.
See you on Monday!

December 23rd, 2009: Dudes I ate SO MANY COOKIES last night, mostly made by Emily Horne and Tim Maly's mom and by Beth, who doesn't have a website! Anyway, if I die of cookie overdose I wanted you to know which of my dear friends to go after! – Ryan

Merry Christmas, Christmas-celebrators out there! Here are some of my favorite Christmas-themed Wondermark strips from years past:
#141; In which the Son of God stands in queue
#260; In which a Plan ends poorly
#363; In which Joy is Mandated
#357; In which Mall Parking sucks
#466; In which Everyone loves the Freak
#474; In which you better Watch Out
#476; In which Suffering was a Waste
And hey, if you’re not celebrating Christmas, that’s okay too — here are a bunch of comics just for you!
Hey gang! Here is a little holiday treat for you. Presenting the very first trailer I ever edited.
I made this in about 1997 — it was shot using any random camcorder I could borrow for an afternoon, and edited with multiple VCRs and sketchy audio software in a weeks-long process that would make anyone born after 1990 break down in tears.
Still, I’m strangely thrilled by it even today. Enjoy:

(And yes, I recycled elements of this plot into a comic strip years later.)

December 21st, 2009: I received some amazing winter footers! I'll leave this up one more day and put up the winner tomorrow. Thanks every! And here's what I'm talking about (from Friday): Okay so it's WINTER and I've still got that fall footer at the bottom of the page. Just like what I did for fall, I'm having a winter footer contest. Send me your best 1000x96 (it can be a bit taller if you want) image that loops, and I'll pick the winner and put it up on the site! Also, if you send in a URL I'll link to your URL with your submission. Here's the fall version and the fall background image I use for looping. When I say "loops" I mean that the left-hand side of the image is the same as the right-hand side of the image, so when they're tiled horizontally they go together nicely. The background image is just repetitive part of the larger image without much detail to it that I can use for tiling. Send them in if you're interested, and thanks! – Ryan

12/21/09 - Happy Solstice! The days only get longer from here, a thought which ALWAYS makes me happy. Tonight, Beth and I made a fire and relaxed (read: worked) in front of it. MORE warm thoughts. :)
Hope you all stay warm.
